If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I think creating and selling educational products is a terrific way to earn some extra money – or even to replace the income from your day job. As more parents decide to home school their kids, there’s a growing demand for quality educational products for kids of all ages.
One of the best places to sell the educational products you create is Amazon Ignite. You can use it to list products, earn royalties, and build a loyal base of customers. Here’s what you need to know.
What is Amazon Ignite?
Amazon Ignite is Amazon’s dedicated marketplace for digital educational resources. Selling is by invitation only and once you’ve been invited you’ll have access to a huge audience of teachers and parents who are eager to buy products like yours.
The only products sold on Amazon Ignite are downloadable educational resources such as assignments, curricula, games, worksheets, and activities. There are products listed for every grade, K through 12, and for all subjects.
How Can You Get Started Selling on Amazon Ignite?
As we mentioned above, Amazon Ignite operates on an invitation-only basis. Unlike Etsy and some other eCommerce sites, you can’t simply sign in and create an account. You must be invited – but fortunately, the invitation process is simple.
You can request an invitation by visiting Amazon Ignite and clicking the Request Invitation button. Amazon limits the number of sellers on Ignite, so you’ll need to be patient and wait for them to get back to you. There’s no way to predict how long it will take. Amazon Ignite’s page simply says, “We’ll contact you when we have an opening available to offer you.”
While Amazon Ignite’s promotional material talks about K-12 educators, you do not need to be a teacher to qualify for an invitation. You’ll fill out an invitation form with some basic information and that’s all you need to do. If you’re already selling educational resources online, make sure to provide the URL of your website or shop. They’ll also ask you what grades you’ll focus on – but the information you provide isn’t binding. It’s easy to expand your product offerings once you’re approved.
Once you’ve received your invitation, you’ll follow these steps to get started.
- Set up your free Amazon Ignite account.
- Upload your resource(s).
- Set your price and enter the product details.
- Publish your resource.
There’s one more step after you publish your resource. Amazon Ignite reviews each resource to ensure its quality and originality.
How Does Amazon Ignite Work?
The sales and royalty set-up at Amazon Ignite will be somewhat familiar to you if you sell on Amazon. It works on a royalty basis. You’ll earn a 70% royalty for each product you sell. That means if you sell a resource for $10, your royalty when you sell it is $7.
The other fee you should know about applies only to products priced at $2.99 or below. Amazon deducts a transaction fee of $.30 per product. There are no hidden fees and, as mentioned earlier, it’s free to set up an account once you receive your invitation.
In terms of payment, Amazon pays Amazon Ignite sellers once a month by direct deposit. They also take responsibility for collecting and remitting sales tax where it’s applicable.
Amazon Ignite supports multiple file formats for educational resources. These include the following.
The format you choose may vary depending on the type of resource being sold. The PDF format is one of the most popular because the file’s appearance on screen will be exactly what customers get when they print it. However, you may choose to use PowerPoint to create flashcards or lesson plans or Excel to create pie charts.
You should also know that Amazon Ignite does not expect to be an exclusive marketplace for the resources you create. You can continue to sell them on your own website, in your Etsy shop, or on Facebook – or anywhere else you choose.
Tips for Getting Started on Amazon Ignite
Let’s review some tips to help you get started and be successful selling on Amazon Ignite.
Familiarize Yourself with Educational Standards
If you’re new to creating educational resources, a good place to start is by familiarizing yourself with Common Core Math Standards and English Language Arts Standards. You can also review curricula online to get a feeling for age-appropriate topics and complexity.
See What Other People Are Selling
You don’t need to be a teacher to create educational resources that both parents and teachers will love, but you do need to familiarize yourself with the kinds of resources that sell. One of the best ways to do that is to explore the marketplaces where people sell them.
In addition to Amazon Ignite, you can also check out stores that sell educational products on Etsy. Another option is Teachers Pay Teachers, a huge online marketplace with more than six million sellers, many of whom are teachers. You’ll need to make sure your products are original, but feel free to use what’s already available as inspiration.
Use the Right Tools
There are lots of tools available to help you create beautiful educational resources. In addition to Word, Power Point, and Excel, you should also check out Canva. They have a huge library of images and templates you can use with their free account, and you can upgrade to get access to millions more.
Set the Right Price
Setting the right price for your educational resources on Amazon Ignite is a must. You already know you’ll earn a 70% royalty. A good way to get started is to look at products like yours on Ignite and see what other sellers are charging for them. It’s essential to make your prices competitive and reasonable if you want people to buy them.
Amazon Ignite offers an exciting opportunity for people who create educational resources and products. When you consider Amazon’s huge SEO advantage and the generous royalties, it’s one of the best places to sell your EDU printables.
